Beyond Psychotherapy:
the Intelligence Prior to Thought

Jeff Tipp, Psychotherapist and Buddhist Practitioner
Thursday, January 18, 7:30 pm
Suggested Donation: $5

Jeff will offer an experiential overview focused on the integration of psychotherapy with meditative insight. He presents a perspective shaped through 40 years experience with the contemplative disciplines of Vajrayana Buddhism and Zen; in both of which he holds a teaching credential. The pivotal point of his approach centers on the effortless immediacy of direct perception, the innate freshness of our everyday mind. Rather than engaging in a range of therapeutic interventions, he guides his clients to pass beyond habitual forms of suffering to meet the basic sanity of the "intelligence prior to thought." The evening will be a mix of guided experience, group inquiry and QandA.

Jeffrey Tipp is a licensed psychotherapist offering transpersonal therapy in his private practice. Training for his integrated practice began in 1968 as a monk in an order of Christian mystics, leading a mission in Hawaii. In the 70s he trained with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, teaching hundreds of individuals Transcendental Meditation. In 1978 he met Zen Master Seung Sahn and developed a Zen Center which has become Blue Heron Zen community, a residential Zen Center in Seattle where he now teaches having received Inka (teaching authorization) in the Korean Zen lineage of Zen Master Seung Sahn in 2006. Parallel to his Zen teaching Jeff has also trained with Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Lama Tsultrim Allione in the Ati Vajrayana Practices of Dzogchen , receiving authorization to teach from Lama Tsultrim in 2008. The common thread Jeff has pursued this past 50 years has been an intimate inquiry into the Nature of Mind and the ineffable mystery of Being. He finds his teaching and therapy practice to be a continually unfolding journey of relationships with others, living the fundamental inquiry of life...... "What am I ?"
